Referees to explain decisions only to team captains at Euro 2024
Referees at the Euro2024 football finals in Germany will only communicate decisions to team captains during matches and any player showing dissent will be cautioned, UEFA has announced.

The European football body today released a document with some guidelines for the refereeing sector, with the aim of improving, underlining the willingness for referees to justify decisions more.
"We ask all teams to ensure that the captain is the only one who speaks to the referee. We ask the captains to ensure that their teammates do not approach the referee, allowing conversations to be direct and the decision to be transmitted in a timely manner and with respect", says the document signed by the refereeing manager, Italian Roberto Rosetti.
Rosetti guarantees that any player who ignores the role of his captain and approaches the referee, showing disrespect, will receive a yellow card.
In the event that the captain is the goalkeeper, UEFA proposes that another outfield player can play the role with the referee, in situations where the moves occur on the opposite side of the field.
"Explaining a decision with 22 players around you is impossible for a referee", added Rosetti and when 200 to 250 decisions are made per game, one every 22 seconds.
At Euro2024, which will take place between June 14th and July 14th, Portugal will have referee Artur Soares Dias, assisted by Paulo Soares and Pedro Ribeiro, while Tiago Martins will be in the competition as a video referee (VAR).
The Portuguese national football team is part of Group F, with the Czech Republic, Turkey and Georgia.
