And if it goes... badly? Benfica considers keeping Roger Schmidt against history

Benfica failed in their mission to achieve the bicampeonato this season, losing the title to their rivals Sporting, after several months of intense protests from the Luz crowd, with the majority of the criticism being directed at Roger Schmidt.

Even so, the German coach’s continuity for next season seems to be a scenario that pleases the management headed by Rui Costa, so, if it materializes, it will be his third consecutive season at the service of the Águias - a record in his coaching career already achieved elsewhere, although without the desired success.

After ending his career at the discreet Delbrucker in 2005, Roger Schmidt took on the role of coach of that same team for three seasons, followed by Preussen Munster and Paderbon, until he left for Austria, with two seasons at RB Salzburg (with the conquest of a championship and a Cup), between 2012 and 2014, in what would be the beginning of a remarkable career in European football... and not only.

Upon his return to Germany, the 56-year-old coach embraced the Bayer Lervekusen project and, after a winning rate of around 50% in the first two seasons, a third season followed that culminated in his dismissal in March 2017, shortly after a thrashing by Borussia Dortmund. The same scenario would end up happening at Beijing Guoan, as he headed to China in July of that year, also leaving the team in the third season, with the season practically halfway through, in July 2019, after having already won a Cup. The third chapter did not go well on either side.

After practically a year without any challenges, Roger Schmidt headed to the Netherlands to coach PSV and, in two seasons, the conquest of a Super Cup and a Cup (both achievements in 2021/22) 'catapulted' the coach to his current adventure at Benfica, where he won the championship last season and the Super Cup played in August.

Third time's the charm?

Although the German coach's permanence beyond next summer is not official, what is certain is that he has a valid contract until 2026, signed in March 2023, even before the end of last season, and, curiously, it was from then on that the success rate of the Encarnados dropped somewhat considerably. After a practically irreproachable season, crowned with the conquest of the I Liga and reaching the 'quarters' of the Champions League, a somewhat 'turbulent' season followed in Luz, despite the good start, with the Super Cup won in the Clássico against FC Porto (2-0), in Aveiro.
