1st Congress of Sports Justice reflects on the model in Portugal
The 1st Congress of Sports Justice will be "a good opportunity" to make an assessment and a reflection on the current model in force in Portugal, explained to Lusa the president of the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS).

Between Thursday and Friday, at the Auditorium of the Faculty of Law of the University of Lisbon, specialists in the field will reflect on the model of sports justice that exists in Portugal, with the first edition of this congress aiming to mark almost 10 years of effective operation of the TAD.
"It is important to open the moment so that the reflection is deeper, with a view to evaluating what went well over the past 10 years, and what justifies it being changed, if anything needs to be changed, and I believe that there are many things that need improvement", justified José Mário Ferreira de Almeida.
According to its president, the TAD has been making "a deep internal reflection, for some years now".
"Those who carry out the activity in the day-to-day of the court, the arbitrators, and the management and supervisory bodies of the court, will naturally be in a privileged position to analyse what is good in the law, is good in compliance with the law, in the execution of the law, and what, in short, perhaps thought with good intentions, has proven over the past 10 years not to serve the purpose that was in the mind of the legislator. And, therefore, the exercise that we want to do, open to other personalities who work in this area, is precisely that reflection", he added.
José Mário Ferreira de Almeida believes that "society understands the need for specialised justice in sports matters".
The TAD began its activity on 1 October 2015 as an independent jurisdictional entity, with specific competence to administer justice in relation to disputes that are relevant to the sports legal system, or related to the practice of sports.
"Until the end of the term of this board of directors, my concern is precisely to ensure that the next terms allow the arbitral tribunal to operate on a basis that increases performance levels, namely efficiency levels", said the president of this body, who wants there to be "an improvement in the legal framework in which the TAD operates" in the future.
Among the topics proposed for debate by the 1st Congress of Sports Justice are "The model of sports justice that we have and the model of justice that we want", "Integrity in sport -- New Challenges" or "Prevention and combating violence, racism, xenophobia and intolerance in sport".
