The 207 kilometers between Francavilla al Mare and Foiano di Val Fortore, with some difficulties in the first half, but practically flat in the second, gave a new opportunity to the sprinters, with their teams not making it easy for a breakaway to start and taking the compact pack to the finish line. After having already won the fourth stage, Milan showed himself to be the strongest sprinter of this edition and, in a somewhat chaotic finish, with a few cyclists falling about 150 meters from the finish line, he won in 04:23.18 hours, the same time as the Belgian Tim Merlier (Soudal Quick-Step) and the Australian Kaden Groves (Alpecin-Deceuninck), second and third, respectively. "It's not just the 20 seconds of the sprint that make me happy. It's all the work that the team did, that's what makes me happy. It's incredible what they did for me, they showed that we are a real team. I have to thank them from the bottom of my heart", said Milan. With only four cyclists, after the withdrawal of the Belgian Cian Uijtdebroeks, who was fifth overall, Visma-Lease a bike launched themselves into the breakaway, with the Italian Edoardo Affini and the Dutchman Tim van Dijke leaving the pack within the first 10 kilometers. The two men from the Dutch team were joined by Frenchman Benjamin Thomas (Cofidis), who was trying to imitate his teammate Thomas Champion, winner of the fifth stage, when he surprised the pack and managed to make the breakaway succeed by a few seconds. The sprinters' teams, this time, did not make it easy and always kept the three escapees under control, not letting them have more than 02.30 minutes ahead, ending up absorbing them 35 kilometers from the end. With the breakaway achieved, the British Geraint Thomas (INEOS), third classified, took advantage of the intermediate sprint to add two bonus seconds, being 02.56 minutes behind the leader of the race, the Slovenian Tadej Pogacar (UAE Emirates), and 16 seconds behind the Colombian Daniel Martínez (BORA-hansgrohe), second. The Portuguese Rui Oliveira (UAE Emirates) arrived integrated in the pack, in the 24th position, following more than 02:20 hours behind the leader of the race.
On Thursday, the 12th stage will be run, between Martinsicuro and Fano, in a total of 193 kilometers, on a course that could be conducive to a breakaway.
