Sunil Chhetri took to social media on Thursday to announce his retirement from international football, with his final game for India set to be against Kuwait on June 6 in a 2026 World Cup qualifier.

"One last game for the love of all. Let's win the game so that we can finish on a happy note. The boy in me will probably continue to fight to play football. But the mature and sensible me knows that this is the right decision," the former Sporting player said in a video posted on social media platform X, formerly Twitter.

Shortly after the announcement, FIFA retweeted an old post in which it placed the 39-year-old, who played for the Lions in 2012/13, alongside Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi, as he is the third-highest active goalscorer for his national team.

The Al Nassr forward has 128 goals for Portugal (in 205 caps), compared to the 106 goals of the world champion for Argentina (in 179 games) and the 93 goals of the Bengaluru player (in 144 games for India).
