FIFA's head of refereeing, Pierluigi Collina, announced at a press conference on Friday that an alternative to VAR, called Football Video Support (FVS), is already being tested in youth competitions.

This technology eliminates the need for a referee dedicated exclusively to analyzing the images. Instead, players and coaches can ask the main referee to review a certain move on a monitor next to the sideline, as already happens in other sports, such as tennis.

Each team starts the match with two review requests, and the number remains the same if the original decision is effectively reversed, and is reduced if the referee maintains the same decision, regardless of what they are called to see.

Similar to VAR, FVS can only be used a total of four times. These are goals, decisions related to penalties, red cards and in the event of an error in identifying players.

So far, Collina explained, the first impressions are "very, very positive": "The goal is to continue testing this new system, namely in our youth competitions. We hope to be able to give those interested the opportunity to implement the system in their competitions".
