FIFA president Gianni Infantino announced at a press conference on Friday that he has called an emergency meeting for next month to discuss whether to expel Israel.

"Football should not and must never become a tool for political battles, and will always be a vector for peace, a source of hope, a force for good that unites rather than divides," he said in comments reported by British newspaper The Telegraph, after the end of the annual congress.

"This legal assessment will have to consider the submissions and claims of both member associations. The results of this analysis and the ensuing recommendation will then be submitted to the FIFA Council," he added.

The move follows a request by the Palestinian Football Association (PFA), which wants the country to be sanctioned over its response to recent terror attacks by Hamas.

The football associations of Algeria, Iraq, Jordan, Syria and Yemen have already formally backed the move, which the chairman of the Israeli Football Association, Shino Moshe Zuares, has called "a cynical and hostile political attempt" to damage his country.

"Seven months after that terrible day, when football matches could not be played in significant parts of Israel, from north to south, and more than 130 Israelis are still held hostage in Gaza, it is outrageous that we are forced to fight for our basic rights," he said.
