Shao Jieni in the 'rooms' of the European qualification for the Olympic Games
Portuguese Shao Jieni, second seed, qualified today for the quarterfinals of the individual qualifying tournament of table tennis for the Paris2024 Olympic Games, while compatriot Fu Yu 'fell' in the second round.

In Sarajevo, where the competition is taking place, Shao Jieni, ranked 57th in the world, beat Ukrainian Margaryta Pesotska, ranked 75th in the sport's hierarchy, by 4-2, with partial scores of 4-11, 12-10, 8-11, 11-5, 11-7 and 11-4.
Shao Jieni will face Slovak Barbora Balazova, number 80 in the world, in the quarter-finals today, a stage from which Fu Yu, sixth seed and 70th in the ranking, was eliminated after being beaten 4-1 by Hungarian Georgina Pota, 66th in the hierarchy, by 8-11, 3-11, 11-9, 6-11 and 9-11.
After both having overcome the group stage, contested by 32 athletes, only with victories, only Shao Jieni remains in the race for qualification for the Olympic Games by this route, reserved for the two finalists, even if the final does not take place.
Fu Yu will join the group that did not qualify in the second round and will be channelled to a new knockout stage, with the two finalists also securing their passport to Paris2024, as well as the winner of the third-place match.
The sixth place in Europe in the individual tournaments will be awarded through the ranking of 11 June.
In the men's competition, Portugal has already secured its presence in the team event, which guarantees the presence of two athletes in the individual event, thus closing the maximum quota per country.
