Rúben Amorim, true to himself, is two-time champion as a coach

Rúben Amorim, supported by the board and the fans, changed 'zero' in relation to the previous season, which ended with a fourth place in the championship, and was crowned two-time national champion as coach in charge of Sporting in 2023/24.

Contracted to Sporting de Braga in 2019 for the then 'prohibitive' amount of 10 million euros, the former player, a champion as a footballer for Benfica, gave the 'leões' their second 'caneco', three years after the victory in the midst of the covid-19 pandemic.
After the victory of 2020/21 - in his first complete season in Alvalade, where he arrived in the final part of the 2019/20 season, which ended in fourth place - Sporting had been second in 2021/22 and again fourth last season. This last record, 'mortal' in other places, did not, however, cause any 'turbulence' in Alvalade, so Amorim was able to continue to do his work with peace of mind and remain faithful to his ideas. Above all, to the tactical system, a '3-4-3' with three centre-backs, two full-backs - with a greater or lesser offensive tendency, depending on the situations - in line with the two midfielders and a trio up front, with two players on the wings and a centre-forward. Amorim even spoke of having a 'plan B', another tactical profile, but he never put it into practice in all these years, the exception being Coates' move up to centre-forward, taking advantage of the good head game of the 'captain', which always seemed more like an option of desperation, a last attempt. This season, however, Sporting's coach rarely needed to resort to Coates, which had a lot to do with the signing of the powerful Swedish striker Viktor Gyökeres, who fitted in wonderfully with the 'leões' scheme. Unlike what happened in previous seasons, Amorim found the perfect 'piece' for his '3-4-3', due to the Swede's physical strength, his goalscoring ability and his ability to give great depth to the 'leões' attack. With Gyökeres, Sporting managed to 'stretch' the game more, with the Swede proving to be an expert in winning the ball from opponents and allowing his teammates to arrive, when it was not he himself who went for the goal, solving it alone, with his powerful shot. In relation to 2022/23, Amorim also clearly got it right with the signing of Danish midfielder Hjulmand, a former Lecce player, who was an 'upgrade' in relation to the presence of the more defensive Uruguayan Ugarte, sold to Paris Saint-Germain. In addition to the two surgical signings, the 'leonino' coach also had the merit of 'discovering' the Mozambican Geny Catamo, who, little by little, won the place of the experienced Ricardo Esgaio on the right, and even ended up deciding the 'title game'. Eduardo Quaresma (22 years old), back from Hoffenheim, and Daniel Bragança (24), after a season injured, were other young players in whom Amorim showed he had complete confidence, not forgetting Diomande (20) and Gonçalo Inácio (22), who reaffirmed their quality. A confessed admirer of Paulinho's qualities, Amorim was also certainly pleased with the player he 'brought' from Sporting de Braga, and scored 15 goals, being the team's second best scorer, and five assists, even with only 11 appearances in the 'eleven', against 20 uses from the bench. The 'leonino' coach never let the Portuguese striker down, nor Francisco Trincão, who, at 24, was not a bet in the first half of the season, but appeared at his best in the second, in which he scored seven goals and six assists. Taking into account the results, backed by almost always very positive performances, and an offensive and very goalscoring football, as evidenced by the impressive record of 96 goals scored, it can be said that Rúben Amorim did everything right. It will not have been like that, it never is, and Amorim even had to apologise for having gone to England to hear proposals for 2024/25, while the title was still mathematically sealed, but the balance could hardly have been more positive. And, if the departure at the end of the season seemed like an inevitability, now it even seems likely that the young 39-year-old coach will continue in Alvalade in 2024/25, which he will certainly want to do in the company of Viktor Gyökeres.
With this duo, Sporting will already start ahead in search of a 'bis' that they have not achieved since the 'tetra' of 1950/54, more or less in 'another life'. Rúben Amorim has the floor.
