The Nordic forward, somewhat 'lost' in the English second division at Coventry, cost the Alvalade emblem's coffers more than 20 million euros, becoming the club's most expensive signing, and was decisive for the return of Sporting and coach Rúben Amorim to the title.
The 25-year-old Swede scored 29 goals and came very close to joining figures such as Bas Dost (34) and Jardel (42) in the group of players who reached three dozen in the new century. Gyökeres contributed a lot to the 'lions' having scored in all 34 rounds and also to having won all the games in Alvalade, not conceding any points in their 'lair'. For the first time, the 'lions' reached 29 victories in the first division (three more draws and only two defeats) and 90 points, the second best mark ever, only surpassed by FC Porto's 91 in 2021/22. In terms of goals, Sporting also had its best season ever in the new century, reaching 96 goals, being only surpassed by Benfica's 103 in 2018/19, with Bruno Lage. Sporting's campaign, which ended with a comfortable 10-point advantage over the second-placed 'encarnados', was marked by an excellent start and also by an unbeatable 2024, with the 'accidents' happening on the way to the Christmas season. After nine wins and a draw, Rúben Amorim's team fell for the first time in November, with a 2-1 defeat against Benfica, at Luz, with an unexpected comeback from the home team in the discounts, and another defeat happened a few days later, already in December, in Guimarães (3-2). With two series of eight consecutive victories, interrupted only by draws against Rio Ave (3-3) and, later, with FC Porto (2-2), Sporting paved the way for the title, proving its status as the most regular team. During this 'journey', the 'lions' starred in motivating victories in Alvalade over FC Porto (2-0 in Alvalade), Sporting de Braga (5-0) and, with more impact, over Benfica (2-1), which definitively launched the team to the title. That match with the 'encarnados' had an unexpected hero, with Catamo signing a 'bis', including the winning goal near the end. In addition to the Mozambican and Gyökeres, Sporting's season had other protagonists, with another Nordic signing arriving and succeeding, such as the Danish midfielder Hjulmand. After a first half of the season that was well erased, Trincão was reborn in 2024, as was Pedro Gonçalves, who were in shape and were very important in the most critical phase of the season.
Also during this period, the Spanish goalkeeper Adán, who came from somewhat irregular performances, was injured, opening doors for the young Uruguayan Franco Israel, who fulfilled and seems to have won a place for next season.
