José Gomes happy with Zamalek's "rewarding" CAF Cup triumph
Portuguese coach José Gomes said today that he was happy with the "extremely gratifying" achievement of the CAF Confederation Cup while working for the Egyptians of Zamalek, winning the second most important continental football trophy in Africa.

"It's rewarding, after such a short period of time, around three months, at the service of Zamalek. With the participation we had in the qualifiers until the final... it's extremely rewarding," explained the coach, in statements to Lusa.
According to the 53-year-old coach, who signed for the Egyptian club in February, the involvement of the fans, who live "with intensity and passion" uncommon in the club's life, also marked him.
"It is lived with great emotion, and this achievement has an impact that cannot be found in Europe. This whole emotional side, after winning the cup, has a very strong mark," he says.
Thus, to the "enormous pride, as a Portuguese", of winning another trophy, leaving "a name in the pages of the club's history" is another factor. "When I have grandchildren and come to visit the pyramids, I can pass by here and show them."
José Gomes started the 2023/24 season at Desportivo de Chaves and arrived in February at the Egyptian emblem, which is in 13th place in the championship.
On Sunday, he beat Berkane of Morocco at home in the second leg of the final, 1-0, guaranteeing a 2-2 that allowed them to lift the trophy, for the second time in Zamalek's history, thanks to the away goals rule.
