The Spanish coach's choices will be announced at 1 pm, at Cidade do Futebol, in Oeiras, although the final list may undergo changes until June 7, the deadline imposed by UEFA for the registration of players who will participate in the tournament to be held in Germany.
With the recent increase from 23 to 26 (with 23 being the minimum and 26 the maximum) by the body responsible for the competition, and with the choices that Martínez made throughout the qualifying phase - and also in the recent friendlies with Sweden and Slovenia -, there will hardly be room for the 50-year-old coach to surprise, although anything is possible. In goal, Diogo Costa, FC Porto's goalkeeper, publicly appointed by Roberto Martínez as the owner of the Portuguese goal, Rui Patrício, record holder for international appearances in this sector, and José Sá will clearly be the Spanish coach's choices. In the center of the defense, António Silva, Danilo, Gonçalo Inácio, Toti Gomes, Rúben Dias and Pepe also have everything to start 'packing their bags' for Germany, although the FC Porto center back, 41, always has the limitations of age, which made him participate in only one game in the entire qualifying phase. Even so, Martínez has repeatedly praised the importance of the already historic center back, not only for his stance on the field, but also for the weight he has in the locker room. On the wings, João Cancelo, Diogo Dalot, Nuno Mendes and Raphaël Guerreiro also seem to have a place, with Nélson Semedo also being able to appear, especially due to the physical problems that Mendes or Guerreiro had throughout the season. Bruno Fernandes, João Palhinha, Otávio, Rúben Neves, Vitinha and Bernardo Silva are unquestionable names in the midfield of the Martínez era, as João Neves also appears to be, and with Matheus Nunes also being able to have space due to the increase in places by UEFA. Up front, Cristiano Ronaldo, João Félix, Rafael Leão and Gonçalo Ramos will only miss Euro2024 if something unexpected happens, with Diogo Jota and Ricardo Horta also practically guaranteed, but only if they are physically fit, which puts them on the list of doubts, along with Matheus Nunes, although for different reasons. Of the March debuts, even with a defeat against Slovenia (2-0), Francisco Conceição seemed to have left a very good image with Martínez, who more than once explained that the winger "has unique characteristics" in relation to the rest of the national players. For this reason, Conceição, who had a great second half of the season at 'dragões', could be the big surprise on Portugal's list for the next European Championship. In Euro2024, Portugal will play in Group F together with the Czech Republic (on June 18, in Leipzig), Turkey (22, in Dortmund) and Georgia (26, in Gelsenkirchen). Before leaving for German soil, the national team will play three preparation matches, against Finland (June 4, at Estádio José Alvalade), Croatia (June 8, at Estádio Nacional) and the Republic of Ireland (June 11, in Aveiro).
Euro2024 will take place from June 14 to July 14.
