José Fonte played forward against Vítor Pereira: "I thought it was a mistake"
The central defender told a curious story about his time in Chinese football, at Dalian.

José Fonte was the special guest on the program Futebol Total, on Channel 11, on Wednesday night. The ex-player of Sp. Braga (the club recently announced his departure) spoke about the possible retirement and the fact that he was relegated to the bench at the end of the season.
He also addressed a curious story about his time in China, which lasted less than a year. It was at Dalian Pro, in 2018, facing Vítor Pereira, who was coaching Shanghai Shenhua.
"It was the first one. As soon as we arrived, me, Nico Gaitán and Carrasco, we went straight to Shanghai and it was a game against Hulk, Óscar and Paulinho. With a huge jet lag. We arrived, there was a talk and we went inside. At half-time, we were already losing three or four. The coach tells the translator: 'If we concede another goal, you'll go up front'. I thought the translator had made a mistake. I asked him to repeat it, because I thought it was a mistake. He says no, and I didn't want to believe it. We conceded and they told me: 'Zé, go forward'. I played 20 minutes and the final score was 8-0."
Fonte's adventure in China lasted only eight games. He then went to Lille, where he would later become French champion. This last season, he played for Sp. Braga and is now free to sign for any club.
