Spanish justice drops bribery accusation against Barcelona

The Barcelona Court ruled this Friday in favor of the appeals filed by the Spanish Anti-Corruption Prosecutor's Office and Barcelona itself, annulling the bribery charges against the club.
At issue, it should be recalled, is the much-publicized 'Negreira case', in which the Catalan team is suspected of having paid around 7.5 million euros over a period of 17 years to José María Enríquez Negreira, former vice-president of the Technical Committee of Referees (CTA), with the aim of gathering reports on the match referees.
According to the document to which the Spanish news agency EFE had access, the then head of refereeing in the neighboring country cannot be considered a "public official", so the accusation 'falls apart'.
"The challenged order incurs a certain contradiction, due to the fact that it maintains, in its operative part, the qualification for the crime of sports corruption, when all the grounds for the resolution are oriented, exclusively and, apparently, exclusively, to justify the condition of public official", it can be read.
"Even so, and the inadmissibility of this new and provisional qualification having been declared, the investigation will be maintained under the terms prior to those dictated by the resolution that must be revoked", it adds.
