Sandro Baessa wins silver at the World Para Athletics Championships
The Portuguese Sandro Baessa won today the silver medal in the 1,500-meter T20 event of the Paralympic World Athletics Championships, the second achieved by Portuguese athletes in Kobe, Japan, where the competition is taking place.

Sandro Baessa finished with a time of 3.55.84 minutes, having only been surpassed by the American Michel Bannigan, who set a new championship record, with 3.51.71, while Cristiano Pereira, the other Portuguese in the final of the event, was fourth, with 3.57.30, his best time of the season.
"I am very happy with this medal. The event was not easy due to the time difference, but I managed to adapt and have a good final stretch. I will continue to work for a good time and a podium position at the Paralympic Games," said Sandro Baessa.
With a representation of 13 athletes, Portugal won the second silver medal in the competition, which allows for the opening of quotas for the Paris2024 Paralympic Games, after the silver medal obtained by Miguel Monteiro in the F40 shot put.
Hélder Mestre finished in fifth place in the 100-meter T51 final, with a time of 23.99 seconds, but the day was also marked by several heats, with Carolina Duarte, European record holder in the 400-meter T13, qualifying directly for the final, with a time of 57.55 seconds, the fourth fastest of all heats.
Sara Araújo and Márcia Araújo finished qualifying for the 200-meter T12 semifinals in 11th and 12th positions, respectively, with times of 28.91 and 29.09 seconds (new personal best).
On Saturday, the last day of the Paralympic Athletics World Championships, three Portuguese athletes will be present in the finals: Lenine Cunha, in the T20 long jump, Hélder Mestre, in the 200-meter T51, and Carolina Duarte, in the 400-meter T13.
