"I still can't say if I'm going to continue. I want to stay and I'm convinced that I'll be here next season", he said in an interview he gave to the Lusa agency this week, believing that the Leixões managers also want him to stay.
The 47-year-old coach took over the technical command of the historic Matosinhos club on January 24th this year and found a pressured, contested and distressed team, which was in 16th place in the overall standings of the Portuguese Second League after 18 rounds and had 17 points. Fangueiro replaced Pedro Ribeiro with the mission of preventing Leixões from being relegated and for that he had a squad of 35 players, "which is a tremendous difficulty", and precarious working conditions. "It's exhausting. We have to find a way to have better working conditions. In four months, I spent more time outside my fortress, my stadium, than inside it", he said, referring to the fact that the team had to carry their 'home on their backs' every week in order to train. Fangueiro specified that the team had to go to work in Freamunde (Paços de Ferreira municipality), Esmoriz (Ovar), Ribeirão (Famalicão), Rio Tinto (Gondomar) and other locations. "Every training session had to be away and many times we couldn't work on strategic aspects because the door was open and we always had people watching. Even in our stadium we couldn't keep the door completely closed, because there's a place where, from the outside, you can see what we're doing", he lamented. Under his guidance, he recalls, two cases were detected, "one of them in a training session dedicated to set pieces, in which someone from the 'staff' of an opposing team was taking pictures and filming outside the stadium". Despite all these setbacks, Fangueiro's Leixões added 20 points in the remaining 16 rounds, guaranteed their permanence in the penultimate round and finished the championship in 14th place, with 37 points. "These are the little things we have to align. To achieve something better, we had to set up our headquarters here. It's very important", he said. The Óscar Marques municipal complex, located behind the north stand of the Estádio do Mar, could be an option, but it has an artificial turf pitch and Leixões is looking for a grass pitch. Fangueiro warns that for Leixões to think about other flights, it's necessary to guarantee working conditions next to the Estádio do Mar and these involve a venue with the necessary privacy, sheltered from outside views. The coach, a native of Matosinhos who is also a self-confessed Leixões fan, analysed what went wrong in the era of Pedro Ribeiro, his predecessor in the team's technical command, and also in his own, pointing to the finishing. Leixões scored 28 goals in the championship, which is less than a goal per game. Carlos Fangueiro stresses that "the players were sad because of the situation" and that he faced them saying "you are really very good". Now, looking back and at the results, he believes that he and his assistants carried out "a fantastic job of leadership and motivation". At home, Leixões only won one game. "I can't understand", says Fangueiro, admitting, however, that "there was a little bit of pressure" on the players in these home matches, due to the extreme demands of the fans. With the new coach, the team lost only one game away and one at home and got "a point here and another there, which gave the team more confidence, because everything counts". Even though there is still no white smoke about his probable continuity in Leixões, the coach says which players he wants to have by his side. "I want players in my image, team men who give their lives on the field and who don't manage their own effort, but rather the technical 'staff'. Men of race and great desire", he concluded.
