At the Estádio Nacional, in Oeiras, the 'dragons' beat the newly crowned national champion Sporting (2-1, after extra time) in the final of the 84th edition of the competition and won the trophy for the 20th time, and the fourth in seven seasons under the guidance of Sérgio Conceição.

FC Porto once again accumulated three consecutive victories in the Portuguese Cup, as they had done between 2008/09 and 2010/11, in a cycle in which the first two were won by Jesualdo Ferreira and the last came under the guidance of then coach André Villas-Boas.

Before that, this record had only been achieved twice by Benfica, which won between 1984/85 and 1986/87 and from 1948/49 to 1952/53 - the 1949/50 edition was not held.

In the Portuguese Cup's honours list, FC Porto reinforced its status as the second most successful club, adding 20 titles, six less than record holder Benfica and three more than Sporting.

André Villas-Boas won his first football trophy since taking office as the 34th president of FC Porto, on May 7th, 10 days after beating Pinto da Costa, the leader for 42 years and 15 terms, in the election with the highest turnout in the club's history.

As in other matches played after the election, the two leaders sat almost side by side in the presidential court of Jamor and hugged each other right after the end of the match, having together lifted the only trophy won by the third-placed team of the I League in 2023/24, just under 48 hours before making the transition of powers in SAD.

André Villas-Boas, 46, will take office on Tuesday, the day on which Pinto da Costa, 86, officially ends a 27-season career at the head of that company, which is responsible for the management of professional 'blue and white' football.

Since July 30, 1997, the date of the foundation of FC Porto SAD, the oldest and most titled leader in world football has won 41 trophies in domestic competitions and four abroad.

The 'blue and whites' have accumulated 14 championships, 12 Portuguese Cups, 14 Cândido de Oliveira Super Cups and one League Cup, as well as one Champions League, one Intercontinental Cup, one UEFA Cup and one Europa League, at the time coached by Villas-Boas.

FC Porto now has 85 titles in football, the same as Benfica, which, in the same period, won 24 trophies - including eight editions of the I League and three Portuguese Cups -, while Sporting won 19 of the current 55, with four championships and five Cups.

Pinto da Costa took over the presidency of SAD 'azul e branca' 27 years ago, but had already been leading the club's destiny since the first time he was elected, on April 17, 1982, the date from which he witnessed the obtaining of 69 titles in just over four decades.

Before the 45 won under the SAD sphere, the club had added to its honours list nine national championship titles, four Portuguese Cups, eight Super Cups, one European Champion Clubs' Cup, one Intercontinental Cup and one European Super Cup.

Pinto da Costa revitalized FC Porto in several areas, whose first 89 years of existence resulted in only 16 trophies in football - seven championships, four Portuguese Cups, one Super Cup and four editions of the extinct Portuguese Championship -, before reconfiguring the correlation of forces with rivals Benfica and Sporting.

As an example, the 'dragons' now have as many victories (16) in the 'queen' competition since April 1982 as 'eagles' (nine) and 'lions' (seven) together, with this supremacy still visible in the I League (23 against 19) and in the Cândido de Oliveira Super Cup (22 against 17).
