Ex-FC Porto assume: "I am 100% alcoholic. I knocked on the devil's door..."
Former Colombian midfielder talks about three very hard years but assures he is recovering with medical help.

Fredy Guarín, a 37-year-old former Colombian midfielder who retired in 2021, admitted to having a serious alcohol problem, in an interview with the magazine Semana, published on Monday. The former player, who wore the FC Porto jersey between 2008 and 2012, revealed the various problems he has faced because of the "addiction".
"At some point I had to explain myself, not because it was an obligation, but because there are people who have a great affection for me: family, fans and clubs. The truth is that I deviated. My decision was to drown myself in alcohol. Many mistakes, bad decisions, I hurt a lot of people, I let my friends down, my family. Alcohol was always the worst trigger," began by explaining the former Colombian international, continuing.
"I am 100% alcoholic and I recognize that. I am an addict in recovery. I remember what was not done well and what was done badly. Learning is my great motivation. I was always a social alcoholic for several years, even while I was active in football. That's when I started making bad decisions. When I left Millonarios it was the lowest point I reached, because during these last three years I fell to the bottom of my addiction. I lost my dignity, my circle of friends and the trust of loved ones and the most valuable thing I have: my three children. I reached a point where I couldn't go on any longer. I had to ask for help and I'm working to fix things. Accepting was the main thing. I'm in a process. I knocked on the devil's door and that's not the best thing," concluded the former midfielder, who in addition to having represented FC Porto on 117 occasions also wore the jersey of clubs such as Inter, Saint-Étienne, Shanghai Shenhua or Vasco.
