French football legend reveals: "Two of my relatives were shot dead"

Christian Karembeu, a former Real Madrid player, gave an extensive interview to the French radio station Europe1 on Tuesday, in which he spoke about the intense clashes that have been taking place in New Caledonia in recent weeks.
The French football legend even revealed that two of his relatives were shot dead in the streets of this French overseas territory.
"I lost family members. That's why I was silent, because I'm in mourning. Two people in my family were shot in the head. They are snipers. We hope that these murders will be investigated," said Karembeu, referring to a nephew and a niece.
New Caledonia, it should be recalled, has been in a state of emergency since last week, following a wave of unrest that has left seven dead and hundreds arrested and forced France to send additional security forces to the archipelago.
