In a statement, the UCI said that the suspension period began on July 25, 2023, when it made the provisional decision on the Colombian, and will remain in effect until July 24, 2027.

The cyclist, now 30 years old, was then riding for Medellín-EPM, in his native country, after having run out of contract in Europe precisely because of the suspicions of doping, being sanctioned for what happened during the 2022 Giro, when he represented Astana and abandoned in the fourth stage.

This is the result of an investigation by the International Testing Agency (ITA) based on evidence from 'Operation Ilex', carried out by the Spanish Civil Guard and the Spanish anti-doping agency (CELAD).

This decision on López, with 25 victories as a professional, including a podium in the Vuelta a España and another in the Giro d'Italia, both in 2018, is subject to appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS).

The cyclist, now 30 years old, lived several years in the limelight in Europe, finishing in the top 10 final of all seven major Tours he managed to finish, also winning three stages in the Vuelta, the Volta a Catalunya and the Volta à Suíça, but the suspicions, and connections to Marcos Maynar, always 'hovered'.

At the center of 'Operation Ilex' is the doctor Marcos Maynar, accused of a series of practices related to doping in cycling in Spain and beyond. Rúben Pereira, sports director of Sabgal-Anicolor, is one of the people under investigation in the scope of this operation.

In May 2022, the Civil Guard arrested Marcos Maynar in Cáceres, former doctor of the Portuguese cycling team LA-MSS, for an alleged crime of illegal trafficking of medicines, having been charged with a crime against public health and another of illegal trafficking of medicines.

Maynar, a professor at the University of Extremadura, was arrested in 2004 in an operation against the trafficking of doping substances in gyms.

Five years later, he was suspended for 10 years by the Portuguese Cycling Federation "for, during the 2008 sports season, having prescribed and/or supplied prohibited and masking substances to some cyclists" of LA-MSS.

In 2015, the doctor was one of six defendants in an alleged doping case involving rowers from the Urdaibai club, having been acquitted at trial.
