It is the first time in history that an auto assembly plant located in the southern United States and not owned by the Detroit Three (General Motors, Ford and Stellantis) has voted to unionize with the UAW.

U.S. President Joe Biden congratulated VW workers on their “historic vote,” according to a statement.

Biden also criticized six Republican governors who sent a letter ahead of the vote urging workers to vote against the union, saying that unionizing would put jobs in their states at risk.

Of the roughly 4,000 workers at the Chattanooga, Tennessee plant, 3,613 cast ballots in the unionization election. After three days of voting, 2,628 voted in favor of joining the UAW, or 73% of votes cast, while 985 voted against the proposal.

The union called the results a “historic victory” and celebrated the workers’ decision.

VW, for its part, acknowledged the pro-union vote by its workers and said it looks forward to the certification of the results by the National Labor Relations Board, the federal agency that oversaw the vote.

“VW thanks the Chattanooga workforce for participating in this election,” the company concluded.

Until now, the Chattanooga plant was the only VW factory in the world where workers were not represented by a union.

In mid-May, some 5,000 workers at a Mercedes-Benz assembly plant in Alabama will also vote on whether to unionize.
