Supermarket workers on strike on May 1st
Workers in supermarkets, retail, warehouses and services will be on strike on May 1, International Workers' Day, to demand wage increases and the promotion of collective bargaining, a union source said today.

The Union of Workers of Large Commercial Surfaces, Warehouses and Services of Portugal (STGSSP) has filed a strike notice that covers workers in these sectors throughout the national territory, from 00:00 to 24:00 on May 1.
According to the union, the strike notice materializes the demand for "better salaries and pensions, dignity in the workplace" and allows workers not to report for duty on the International Workers' Day holiday "in situations where they are required to work".
The workers demand a general increase in salaries and pensions, the promotion of collective bargaining, the regulation of working hours and the reconciliation of professional and family life.
In the notice, the STGSSP states that, during the strike, "the services necessary for the safety and maintenance of equipment and facilities will be observed, in the manner usually ensured by the workers, and as happens during the periods of daily and/or weekly closing and provided that they cannot be ensured by the workers" who do not join the strike.
