Retail sales rise 3.2% in March
Retail sales rose 3.2% in March, 2.5 percentage points more than in February, according to data published today by the National Institute of Statistics (INE).

The increase in sales of 5.5% in wholesale trade and 0.4% in retail trade contributed to this evolution.
The INE data reveal that trade, maintenance and repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles accelerated 0.4 percentage points (p.p.), to a variation of 2.9%, wholesale trade (including agents), except for motor vehicles and motorcycles, increased by 5.5% in March after a reduction of 0.2% in the previous month, and retail trade, excluding motor vehicles and motorcycles, recorded a growth of 0.4%, less intense by 0.6 p.p. than that observed in the previous month.
Food products accelerated 2.6 p.p., to a variation of 5.1%, while non-food products decreased by 2.5% (0.1% in February).
In February, total sales in trade had grown by 0.7%, with the turnover in retail increasing by 1%, while wholesale trade fell by 0.2%.
Considering the first quarter, sales in trade increased by 1.1% compared to the same period in 2023, registering an acceleration of 2.2 percentage points (p.p.) compared to the previous quarter. In nominal terms, the variation in this quarter was zero, while in the last quarter of 2023 it was -0.9%.
The INE data also indicate that the employment, remuneration and hours worked indexes showed year-on-year variations of 1.4%, 7.4% and -0.5% in March (1.9%, 8.2% and 1.4% in the previous month), respectively.
The monthly rate of change in the employment, remuneration and hours worked indexes was 0.2%, 2.7% and 5.5%, respectively (0.7%, 3.5% and 7.6% in March 2023).
