The final results of the session show that the selective Dow Jones index fell 1.49%, the technological Nasdaq lost 2.04% and the broad S&P500 fell 1.57%.
After five consecutive months of gains, Wall Street recorded its first month of losses.
"Today we had four numbers" about the US economy "and none were favorable to the stock market," summarized Steve Sosnick of Interactive Brokers, in statements to AFP.
On the eve of a monetary decision by the Federal Reserve (Fed), the employment cost index rose faster than expected in the first quarter, by 1.2%, which was the fastest pace in a year and a half.
On the other hand, house prices, according to the Case Shiller index, remained sharply high [six percent at an annual rate in February] due to high mortgage rates and the low level of goods for sale.
The activity index in the highly industrial region of Chicago contracted again, to 37.9 points, in what was its fifth consecutive monthly decline.
Finally, consumer confidence, measured by the Conference Board in April, fell to 97 points, the lowest value in 17 months, instead of the expected 103.5 points.
"None of this is a good scenario for stocks. I'm not saying that stagflation is here, but I intend to use the term more and more," said Sosnick, referring to a state of the economy that combines weak or no growth with high inflation.
Bond yields rose to 4.68%, up from 4.61% the previous day, and the dollar strengthened as the start of the Fed's benchmark interest rate cut appeared to be receding.
Fed Chairman Jerome Powell's press conference on Wednesday, after the Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) meeting, will provide more information on the central bank's intentions.
