The Tax Authority (AT) reminded that taxpayers who intend to pay IMI by direct debit must adhere to this payment method by May 15th.

"How many times have you forgotten an important task? To avoid forgetting to pay IMI on time, adhere to direct debit by May 15th", notes AT, in a publication shared on the social network Facebook.

It should be recalled that the deadline for payment of the Municipal Property Tax (IMI) on rustic and urban properties began on Wednesday, May 1st.

At issue is the first instalment of IMI or the payment of the total tax if its value is less than 100 euros, which can be made until the end of May.

IMI is levied on the taxable property value (VPT) of properties, including a single rate of 0.8% in the case of rustic properties (land) and a rate that varies between 0.3% and 0.45% on urban properties (buildings and land for construction).

The tax is calculated and collected by AT, but it is the local authorities that decide, every year, which rate they intend to apply in their municipality, within the aforementioned ranges.

It is also up to the local authorities to indicate to the tax authorities whether they intend to apply the increased rates provided for in the law for vacant and dilapidated properties - this increase being higher when the houses are located in areas of urban pressure -, as well as the family IMI, with 267 municipalities intending to grant this discount this year (for IMI relating to 2023), according to an official source from the Ministry of Finance in response to Lusa.

At issue is a reduction of 30 euros when there is one dependent; 70 euros when there are two and 140 when there are three or more dependents.

These values were reinforced by the More Housing law and are compared to those previously in force, which were (in the same order) 20, 40 and 70 euros, depending on the number of dependents.

According to the law, IMI is paid in a single instalment, in the month of May, if the total value of the properties held by a taxpayer results in a tax value of up to 100 euros. If this value is exceeded and up to 500 euros, the payment is divided into two instalments (to be paid in May and November).

For owners with IMI accounts over 500 euros, the tax is divided into three instalments, which must be paid in May, August and November.

For several years now, owners have had the possibility, if they wish, to make the total payment of the tax with the settlement of May.
