BCP expects financial margin compression but wants to reverse the situation
The CEO of Millennium BCP predicted today "some compression" of the bank's financial margin, with a period of reduction of interest rates, but assured that the bank he leads will counteract the situation.

"I am moderately optimistic, I would even say more, realistic and perspective that a period of interest rate reduction will begin", which, "obviously, has implications for the financial margin rate", BCP's executive president (CEO), Miguel Maya, told Lusa on the sidelines of the Ovibeja agricultural fair, which runs until Sunday in Beja.
According to Millennium BCP's CEO, deposits "also have a different level of remuneration today than in the past", so "there will tend to be some compression in the financial margin".
On Thursday, in a telephone call with analysts, Novo Banco's executive president, Mark Bourke, admitted that the bank is going through a peak in the financial margin, particularly in the field of the financial margin rate, which concerns the relationship between the financial margin and the average balance of total interest-bearing assets.
Questioned today by Lusa about this matter, the leader of Millennium BCP recalled that he had already mentioned this trend at the "end of the third quarter of last year", when the results were presented.
But BCP will "counteract" this situation, argued the CEO, justifying that it is precisely for this reason that the bank is present at Ovibeja, because it wants to "be closer to customers" and wants to "do more business".
In order to "compensate for the decrease in the margin rate with the increase in the margin due to a greater relationship with our customers", he stressed.
