Metropolitan Mobility Plan advances even without a decision on the airport
The chairman of Lisbon’s public transport company (TML) said today that the decision on Lisbon’s future airport is important for the Metropolitan Sustainable Urban Mobility Plan, but cannot condition the response to the population’s needs.

"This plan is dynamic, in other words, we can always look at and measure the measures and actions. And, if they are not achieving their objectives, change and create new measures. In this way, we can correct some of the things that a large infrastructure such as the new airport may introduce. But we cannot wait for this type of decision, at the risk of not responding to what people's desires are", he added.
Faustino Gomes was speaking to the Lusa agency after the first public presentation session of the development process of the Metropolitan Plan for Sustainable Urban Mobility (PMMUS) of the Lisbon Metropolitan Area (AML), which took place in the Rui Guerreiro municipal auditorium, in Pinhal Novo, in Palmela, in the district of Setúbal. According to the head of TML, the PMMUS, which should be completed in 15 months, aims to improve sustainable urban mobility, seeking to make the global response compatible with the desires of the populations of the 18 municipalities of the Lisbon Metropolitan Area. "The objective is to find sustainable mobility solutions in an urban logic, but also in a metropolitan logic, because each of the municipalities has its own logic, of what it wants to offer its residents, but mobility problems are not solved on a local scale, but on a regional scale", he said. "This plan aims to 'stitch together' these policies (local and regional), find measures and actions, and, therefore, specify in the plan what seem to us to be the actions that lead to this sustainable mobility. Therefore, we defined that we will have a set of goals, a set of indicators to reach these goals and, therefore, measures so that, at the end of the implementation, we are closer to what we consider to be sustainable urban mobility", he added. Faustino Gomes also stressed that there is a concern to promote the participation of the population in the preparation of the PMMUS, a plan that includes a Strategic Environmental Assessment and that was awarded through an international public tender for a total amount of 300 thousand euros, an amount that will be supported by the company TML, 100% owned by the municipalities that make up the Lisbon Metropolitan Area.
