Veterinary business grows 6.1% in 2023 to 385 million
The turnover of the veterinary activities sector grew by 6.1% in 2023 to 385 million euros and the number of companies remained at 2,736, according to the analysis by Informa D&B presented today.

According to the analysis by Informa D&B, the sector has recorded "significant dynamism" since 2014, with annual growth rates of over 10% up to 2021, due to the growing number of pets in Portuguese homes.
The number of pets in Portugal was around 5.4 million in 2022, with dogs remaining the most popular, representing 48% of the total, ahead of cats with 33%, followed by birds with 12%, small mammals with 4%, aquarium animals with 2% and reptiles with 1%.
The number of companies that carry out veterinary activities in Portugal has been growing since 2013, reaching 2,736 in 2022, 3.5% more than the previous year.
Employment also increased between 2012 and 2022, going from 3,948 to over 7,900 workers in the area.
According to the analysis by Informa D&B, over 95% of companies employ less than 10 workers and in 2022 most companies were located in areas with the highest population density, with Lisbon representing 30% of the total businesses, followed by the North region, with 27%, and the Central region, with 22%.
