Last week, the Government announced that prescription drugs would be free of charge for beneficiaries of the Solidarity Supplement for the Elderly (CSI), a measure that is expected to cover around 140 thousand people.
DECO PROteste prepared a set of questions and answers from which Notícias ao Minuto selected five to help answer any questions on the subject. Stay tuned:
1. Will all drugs become free of charge for the elderly covered by the measure?
"No. The measure only includes prescription drugs. No discounts or exemptions are foreseen for over-the-counter drugs, even if they are prescribed by a doctor."
2. Will only generic drugs be free of charge?
"No. The 100% co-payment applies to all prescription drugs, whether generic or brand-name."
3. Where can the free drugs be picked up?
"The elderly covered by the measure can continue to purchase their drugs at any pharmacy, as was the case when the drugs were paid for by the user. They only need to present the prescription to the pharmacist. The pharmacy's computer system will already have the information that the user is entitled to a 100% co-payment, which will be applied automatically."
