In a statement, the association of farmers, who mostly produce oranges, indicates that in the first six months of the citrus agricultural campaign in the Algarve (from September 2023 to February 2024), the quantity of citrus sold by AlgarOrange members exceeded 42 million kilos.

Thus, there was an overall increase of 4.5%, compared to the same period of the previous campaign, says AlgarOrange, stressing that the prospects lead producers to ensure the capacity for a normal supply to the national and international market.

"The orange production in the Algarve region is proceeding according to the initial forecasts, with a slight increase in winter varieties and a more pronounced increase in spring and summer varieties, compared to the previous campaign", says the association.

On the other hand, taking into account the production estimates of the varieties being harvested and to be harvested, the producers associated with AlgarOrange predict that the citrus campaign will "extend until the end of September, beginning of October" 2024.

According to AlgarOrange, about 74% of the area and 88% of the citrus production in the country is located in the Algarve and it is here that oranges, clementines, tangerines and lemons are produced, among other products.

"We are committed to taking all possible measures to combat the effects of climate change through available technology and investment in innovation and development", says José Oliveira, president of AlgarOrange, quoted in the note.

The agricultural leader also assures that between 2009 and 2022, Algarve farmers managed to reduce water consumption by 50% and are, at this moment, "the most efficient in the management of this resource".

According to AlgarOrange, in 2023, Portuguese citrus exports exceeded 197 million euros, 10.4 million more than in the previous year.

At the end of 2023, citrus producers feared that the drought situation and the lack of water in the Algarve could mean a significant reduction in the quantities produced, but the rains that occurred in the first quarter of 2024 will have changed these initial fears.

AlgarOrange members represent about 40% of citrus production in the Algarve and 30% of national production.
