Unemployment rose by 0.8% compared to the previous quarter, which means the number of unemployed people increased by 330,000 to 8.2 million, according to the EFE news agency.
Youth unemployment stood at 45.5% in the first quarter, about 1.3% higher than in the previous three months, added Stats SA, which reported that the number of unemployed young people increased by 22,000 to 16.7 million in the first three months of this year, compared to the last quarter of last year.
The sectors that contributed most to the net increase in employment include trade, manufacturing, transport, agriculture and mining, EFE said, noting that the areas where the most jobs were lost were community and social services, construction, finance and public services.
High unemployment is one of the most important issues in the election campaign for the presidential elections of May 29, in which the current president, Cyril Ramaphosa, is the favourite to retain the post, although the African National Congress (ANC) could lose its absolute parliamentary majority for the first time, according to the polls.
