Luís Montenegro announced, in a statement to the country from the official residence of the prime minister, in Lisbon, that the Government has chosen Alcochete (district of Setúbal) as the location for the new international airport of Lisbon, following the recommendation of the Independent Technical Commission (ITC) created by agreement between the PSD and the previous PS Government.
"I said, on that occasion, as it is fair to say that the previous prime minister also did, that a year of work by the ITC did not mean delaying a decision that had been awaited for 50 years by another year", he argued.
For Montenegro, "this year of assessment was essential and the appropriate way to unblock the process".
"It was neither irresponsible haste nor passive postponement. Today, as prime minister, I want to affirm that these decisions, although rapid, are considered, well-founded and strategic for the future of Portugal", he said.
"The national interest does not only demand a decision, it demands that the best decision be made based on the best information", he reinforced.
