"The new airport has a very long history that doesn't make us all proud. Having a decision and starting a process now, I think it's healthy for everyone and it's good that it's this way", he said, in statements to journalists in London, where he was to celebrate the 75th anniversary of the Lisbon-London air connection.

The Prime Minister, Luís Montenegro, announced today the approval of the construction of the new airport in the Lisbon region in Alcochete, following the recommendation of the Independent Technical Commission (CTI).

The official, who spoke shortly before the announcement, expressed his wish that the construction would take place "as quickly as possible and with as few obstacles as possible".

"I hope that this will come to fruition, which is good for everyone", he stressed.

Acknowledging that the new airport "won't be ready in the next seven, eight, ten years, Luís Rodrigues, explained that "TAP has to find a way to evolve and continue to grow until then, little by little, in the other airports, Porto, Faro, Funchal, Ponta Delgada".

When the new airport is operational, he assured, TAP "will be a new company, with more growth opportunities, and that's very important, even for the privatisation process".

"The expansion of Portela [current Humberto Delgado Airport] is necessary to accommodate until then, because the new airport will take those years to build. In order not to remain stagnant for the next seven to ten years, I think it's inevitable that Portela will grow within the limits of its physical capacity", he added.

Luís Rodrigues, who took office about a year ago, revealed that he had already had a "normal informal contact" with the Government, during which he presented the plans for the company, and said he was satisfied with the interaction.

"I would very much like TAP and the issue of the privatisation of TAP and the airport to be a topic of broad political consensus. I'm not saying unanimity, because we already know that that's impossible, but of broad political consensus and not of division between the political parties", he emphasised.

For the TAP manager, "enough with the divisions" and it would be good to "align everyone in the same direction and build a brand that's essential for the country to be proud of what it has".
