A single airport "is the most suitable solution" and Alcochete is the most advantageous
The prime minister argued today that the option for a single airport is the "solution most appropriate to the country's strategic interests", and that Alcochete guarantees room for expansion and growth of TAP's 'hub'.

"Alcochete, in particular, guarantees margin for physical expansion, accommodating demand up to almost triple the current one, safeguarding the maintenance and possible growth of TAP's 'hub' in Portugal", defended Luís Montenegro, in a statement to the country at the official residence in São Bento.
The Prime Minister also defended that the choice of Alcochete will foster "the intermodal capacity" of the entire transport system and generate macroeconomic effects in the southern riverside, generating a new economic and social centrality.
"It is a project that will be developed on public land and ensures sustainability, having already had an Environmental Impact Declaration that, in the meantime, has expired", he added.
In the question phase to the Minister of Infrastructure - Luís Montenegro did not answer questions from the media -, Miguel Pinto Luz stated that the head of government spoke with the Secretary-General of the PS, Pedro Nuno Santos, before this announcement.
In addition to deciding the location and name of the new Lisbon airport - which will be called Luís de Camões -, the Government also approved the determination of a works plan for the current Humberto Delgado Airport, the conclusion of studies for a third crossing of the Tagus and the high-speed rail link between Lisbon and Madrid.
"The Government intends to make a rigorous management of public resources and leverage a cycle of lasting and sustained prosperity", said the Prime Minister.
Montenegro defended that these infrastructures "will bring greater convenience to the Portuguese" and to tourists who visit the country.
"These decisions stimulate the competitiveness of our economy, accelerate the capacity to attract investment and growth and also promote territorial cohesion", he said, defending that only in this way will Portugal have the conditions to pay "better salaries and pensions" and retain more talent in Portugal.
