The Government announced today that the future Lisbon international airport will be located in the Alcochete Firing Range, with the expectation that it will be operational in 2034, after which date the current Humberto Delgado airport should be dismantled.
"We have no doubts that the land must be decontaminated: there was an airport infrastructure that operated there for almost a century, but it is possible, and we will find a way, together with the local authorities, the central government, the various associations, and the residents of the surrounding area, to reuse that space," he assured.
Miguel Pinto Luz - who only answered three questions from the media and the Prime Minister only made a statement - argued that, "in close dialogue with the Lisbon City Council, the Portuguese State, and the various ministries", "a new centrality" can be developed on the land in Portela where the Humberto Delgado airport is currently located.
