In the economic forecasts for spring, published today, the community executive maintains, compared to the autumn forecasts, an unemployment rate of 6.5% in 2024 and 6.4% in 2025, which compares to the rate of 6.7% and 6.5%, respectively, projected by the Portuguese Government in the Stability Programme.

Brussels points out, in the analysis of the Portuguese economy, that "the unemployment rate increased from 6.2% in 2022 to 6.5% in 2023, in a context of strong growth in both labour supply and employment".

Recalling that, according to the labour force survey, employment growth remained robust also in the first months of 2024, but unemployment increased slightly along with the increase in labour supply.

"The data show a substantial increase in the working-age population in early 2024, which is explained by positive migration flows", it states.

The community executive believes that unemployment will decrease slightly in the coming months, as job creation should gradually absorb the increase in labour supply.

It also highlights that, since some sectors of the economy continue to register "restrictive hiring conditions", wages should grow slightly faster than inflation, also supported by solid profit margins in the corporate sector.
