"A decision is good news, a decision with technical consensus and political consensus is equally good news, because it reinforces this conviction of everyone -- of the political country, of the economic country and of the social country -- that this decision was necessary, was needed and is today absolutely a priority", defended the president of AHP, Bernardo Trindade, in statements to Lusa.

On Tuesday, the Government announced the decision to build a new international airport in Lisbon in Alcochete, believing that it could be ready in 10 years, and to promote investments to increase the capacity of Humberto Delgado Airport, until it is fully replaced by the new infrastructure on the south bank of the Tagus River.

"Let's not fool ourselves, the completion of the new airport will take 15 years", said today the president of AHP, considering it necessary "to find alternatives that allow us not to dispense with the equivalent of 1.3 million passengers, which was what Lisbon airport had to refuse in 2023".

"The works in Portela have and must move forward, but they are not exactly to increase capacity, but above all to improve the level of service on the ground and in the air and, therefore, we have to look at alternatives that are placed until the airport is completed", highlighted the representative of the hoteliers.

Bernardo Trindade recalled that one of the hypotheses discussed was Beja airport, which he considers acceptable only for traffic that is not destined for Lisbon, due to the distance.

The tourism sector defended the Montijo solution, pointing out that it was cheaper and faster to implement than the other alternatives.

"Together with Portela, we had a capacity identical to that of Madrid airport. This hypothesis was rejected, so with the same capacity to reject a solution like this, we have to think about alternative solutions to the alternatives around Lisbon, where we have some airport infrastructures", stressed the president of AHP.
