Miguel Almeida commented on the issue of the removal of the Chinese company Huawei from the 'core' of the 5G network in Portugal, during the State of Communications debate, at the 33rd APDC Congress, which ends today in Lisbon.
"First of all, it is important to emphasize that the deliberation goes far beyond what has been the practice in Europe, in terms of the scope of network components that are covered by this measure," he said.
NOS did not use Huawei in its 5G network.
The CEO of Vodafone Portugal, Luís Lopes, endorsed "the words of Miguel" Almeida.
"For some months now I feel that there has been more dialogue in this regard than at a time when some decisions were made on this matter that would raise significant operational problems for the country, operational problems that are now being understood and addressed constructively with more dialogue," added Luís Lopes.
In May 2023, the Security Assessment Commission (CAS), within the scope of the Superior Council for Cybersecurity, released a deliberation on the "high risk" to the security of 5G networks and services from the use of equipment from suppliers that, among other criteria, are from outside the EU, NATO or OECD and that "the legal system of the country in which it is domiciled" or connected "allows the Government to exercise control, interference or pressure over its activities operating in third countries".
The deliberation does not mention the names of companies or countries, but the fact is that the case of Huawei comes to mind, namely because the Chinese technology company has been banned from 5G networks in other European countries.
