In a statement, the EU executive announced that it has invested just over a billion euros in 54 "collaborative research and development projects in the field of defence".

Of the total, 30 projects are for research and will be funded with 265 million euros, while the remaining 24 projects are intended to improve European defence capabilities with 766 million euros.

"The selected projects will aim to support technological excellence in critical areas, including cyber defence, land, air and naval combat, protection of space assets or chemical, biological, radiological and nuclear defence", revealed the executive of Ursula von der Leyen.

The Commission expects that these 54 approved projects, which will receive funding under the European Defence Fund, can "contribute to the capability priorities" of the European Union in the area of defence, while creating a collaborative environment.

And it gave the example of two projects, MARTE and FMBTech, which bring together more than 70 industrial and research organisations to design and build the systems of a combat vehicle to be used throughout Europe.

The European Commission received a total of 236 proposals from different consortia, from 581 organisations from 26 Member States of the Union, "with the involvement of small and medium-sized enterprises".
