João Lourenço, who spoke at the inauguration of the board of directors of the Angolan state oil company, reappointed in its almost entirety after the end of the five-year term, wants Sonangol's management to work on increasing oil production, in particular gas, at a time when the country is no longer a member of OPEC (Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries).

"A new gas consortium has been formed, changes have been made to the legislation to encourage gas production, so that Angola is no longer just a major oil producer and exporter but, if possible, preferably, a major producer and exporter of natural gas", urged the Angolan chief executive.

He also pointed out the "important infrastructures of the sector" that are under construction, such as the Lobito Refinery and the Barra do Dande Ocean Terminal, requesting that they be completed "in due time".

"We expect a lot from this Board; that it also has the ambition to start looking at other sources of energy production, as other similar companies have already done", said João Lourenço to Sonangol's directors, stressing "that the world is calling for new sources of energy production".

"You are already in the business, it is a matter of creating another arm that can then meet this urgent need to diversify our energy production sources", reinforced the Angolan president.
