Major banks with 24 more employees and two fewer branches

The five main banks headquartered in Portugal ended the first quarter with 24 more employees than at the end of 2023, having lost two branches in the space of three months.

Caixa Geral de Depósitos (CGD) remained, among the analyzed financial institutions, the one that employs the most workers at the end of March. At the end of the first quarter, the public bank had 6,245 workers in Portugal in all its activity, two more than at the end of December.

In homologous terms, the accounts sent to the market today now register 458 more workers compared to March 2023, but the 5,787 employees reported last year only referred to workers assigned to banking activity.

In turn, the number of branches of the public bank remained at 515.

Millennium BCP, a private bank with the largest number of employees, increased its number of employees by 27 in the first quarter, despite a decrease of four in the space of a year. At the end of March, the institution led by Miguel Maya had 6,269 employees and 399 branches.

Santander Totta reduced its workforce by 35 employees in a row, to 4,580 workers, while the number of branches fell by two, to 332. In homologous terms, the bank has 97 fewer workers and four fewer branches.

BPI maintains the 316 service points with which it closed the year and gained 12 workers in the period. In homologous terms, the bank lost 111 workers and three branches, ending the quarter with 4,275 employees.

Novo Banco increased its number of workers by 18 to 4,227 compared to December, ending the first three months with 122 more workers compared to March 2023, despite having reduced its number of service points by two, to 290.

On March 31 of this year, the five banks under analysis totaled 25,596 workers and 1,850 service points.

The five largest banks operating in Portugal registered aggregate profits of 1,225.2 million euros in the first three months of the year, up 33.2% compared to the same period last year.
