"I always draw attention to this, I don't like to mess with this very much because this rate has been fixed since 2015", warned Berta Cabral, during a hearing in the Economy Committee of the Parliament of the Azores, in Ponta Delgada, regarding a proposal by Chega that aims to simplify the model for attributing the social mobility subsidy to residents of the Azores.

The Chega deputies want passengers from the Azores to pay only 134 euros (the maximum value for a resident rate between the region and the mainland) and for the difference between this value and the real cost of the rate to be reimbursed to the airlines, directly by the State.

Currently, Azoreans who travel between the region and the mainland have to buy plane tickets at values that are often much higher than 134 euros, and are later reimbursed for the difference at the CTT counters.

For Berta Cabral, the discussion that has now been triggered by Chega's proposal could, however, also lead to a change in the value of the rate, which she believes would be "harmful" to the region.

According to the official, a working group has already been created between the Government of the Republic and the executive of the Azores to assess possible changes to the social mobility subsidy model.

However, she admitted that the solution, "although not impossible", is "difficult" to achieve, since the region does not have, for example, "any database on passengers residing in the Azores".

"We have to know who is supporting this, who is going to have this administrative work, of checking, receiving the various tickets, the boarding passes, that is, doing all this work that the CTT does today", warned the official.

During the morning, the deputies had already heard from representatives of SATA and the Portuguese Association of Travel Agencies, who fear that a change in the rules of the social mobility subsidy could financially penalise tour operators.

The deputies of the Regional Assembly also intended to hear the Minister of Infrastructure, Miguel Pinto Luz, on this matter, but the official was unable to participate in the hearing, because at the same time he was being heard in the Assembly of the Republic.
