The IVDP, headquartered in Peso da Régua, Vila Real district, announced in a press release that it has decided to prohibit the bulk entry into the Douro of grapes, musts, wines and other wine products or similar products that are not covered by the Statute of Protected Designations of Origin (PDO) and Protected Geographical Indication (PGI) of the Douro Demarcated Region.

A measure that, according to the public institute, is supported by the Minister of Agriculture.

"It is our obligation to comply with European and national legislation in respect of PDOs and PGIs. This is also a way of supporting and valuing our producers and our products, as well as creating value through the defense of the heritage that are the designations and geographical indications", said José Manuel Fernandes, quoted in the press release.

In turn, Gilberto Igrejas, president of the IVDP, highlighted "the commitment to defending the authenticity and quality of the wines of the Douro Demarcated Region, ensuring compliance with the rules and protecting the prestige of its designations of origin and geographical indications".

The IVDP also added that "respecting the legislation in force and considering the risks to the genuineness of wines with PDO or PGI from the Douro Demarcated Region, it may previously authorize the said entry, with specific and strict conditions being established to be observed by the respective economic agent".

According to the public institute, the circular released today comes into effect on Saturday.

At a time when there is much talk about the excess of wine 'stock' in Portugal, some organizations in the sector have defended a brake on imports of bulk wines.

For example, recently, the National Association of Designations of Origin (ANDOVI) blamed the lack of control in the commercial destination given to bulk imported wine, especially from Spain, for the current "bubble of stock accumulation" that is affecting the sector and asked for "credible control" from the Government.
