Tratolixo workers started a 24-hour strike at 00:00 today to demand salary improvements. The strike was called by the National Union of Local and Regional Administration Workers (STAL) and involves workers from the Trajouce factories, in the municipality of Cascais, and Mafra, in a universe of around 300 people.

"The strike is around 80% this morning. We have about fifty workers gathered near the company in São Domingos de Rana [municipality of Cascais] to demand better working conditions", she told Lusa.

According to Cátia Nunes, the workers have been waiting for six years for the administration to implement the Company Agreement, improving working conditions.

"The board of directors has been pushing this problem down the road. The workers demand to be respected and valued, professionally", pointed out the unionist.

The immediate salary increase of 150 euros, the establishment of a 35-hour work week, the allocation of a minimum wage of 1,000 euros during this year and a meal allowance of 10.50 euros, as well as a greater coverage of the supplement for unhealthiness, hardship and risk are the main demands of the workers.

Contacted by Lusa on Friday, a source from the Tratolixo administration stated that "a negotiation process for the Company Agreement is underway, so the dialogue with the unions should continue at the negotiating table".

"Even so, Tratolixo recalls that, being aware of the importance of reinforcing purchasing power, it proceeded with salary increases for 2024 above those set in the legal diploma for the private sector and for the public administration, having guaranteed an increase in the base remuneration above the minimum wage set", indicates the company.

The last time Tratolixo workers went on strike was in December 2022, when they stopped for 48 hours.

Tratolixo is a certified intermunicipal company, 100% owned by AMTRES -- Association of Municipalities of Cascais, Mafra, Oeiras and Sintra, in the district of Lisbon, for the treatment of solid waste and responsible for the public service of treatment of urban waste produced by the more than 800,000 inhabitants of the municipalities of this urban waste management system.
