Portugal exhausts horse mackerel quota (and fishing will be banned on Tuesday)
The Portuguese fleet has exhausted its horse mackerel fishing quota in the Southern Bay of Biscay area, and these catches will be banned from Tuesday, announced today the Directorate-General for Natural Resources, Safety and Maritime Services (DGRM).

At the end of April, the DGRM had already warned of the possibility of closing this fishery, since 80% of the quota had already been used.
"Considering the current level of discharges made by the Portuguese horse mackerel fleet ('trachurus spp.'), in subzone 8c, it is found that the fishing quota allocated to Portugal is exhausted", reads a note released today by the DGRM.
Subzone 8C corresponds to the Southern Bay of Biscay.
In view of this scenario, it was decided to ban horse mackerel fishing in the area in question, the keeping on board, transhipment and unloading of catches made, "from 12:00 am on May 21st".
The DGRM is a central service of the State's direct administration, with administrative autonomy, which aims to develop maritime safety and services, implement fishing policies and preserve resources.
