Portuguese fleet has exhausted quota. Horse mackerel fishing is now prohibited
Horse mackerel fishing in the Southern Bay of Biscay area is banned as of today, after the Portuguese fleet has exhausted this quota.

"Considering the current level of landings made by the Portuguese fleet of horse mackerel ('trachurus spp.'), in subzone 8c, it is found that the fishing quota allocated to Portugal has been exhausted", reads a note released on Monday by the Directorate-General for Natural Resources, Safety and Maritime Services (DGRM).
Subzone 8C corresponds to the Southern Bay of Biscay.
In view of this scenario, it was decided to prohibit horse mackerel fishing in the area in question, keeping on board, transhipment and landings of catches made, "from 24:00 on 21 May".
At the end of April, the DGRM had already warned of the possibility of closing this fishery, since 80% of the quota had already been used.
The DGRM is a central service of the State's direct administration, with administrative autonomy, which aims to develop maritime safety and services, implement fishing policies and preserve resources.
