The number of unemployed people registered at employment centres fell by 1.9% in April compared to March, but rose by 7.8% year-on-year, totalling 318,331, according to data from the Institute of Employment and Vocational Training (IEFP).

At the end of April, 318,331 unemployed people were registered with employment services in mainland Portugal and the autonomous regions, 22,909 more (7.8%) than in the same month the previous year, but 6,285 fewer (-1.9%) compared to March, according to the IEFP.
At a regional level, in April, with the exception of the Azores (-13.2%) and Madeira (-21.4%), unemployment increased in year-on-year terms, with the most significant increase being in the Algarve region (18%).
Compared to the previous month, with the exception of the Lisbon and Vale do Tejo and Central regions, the trend is towards a reduction in unemployment, with the greatest variation occurring in the Algarve region (-19.4%).
Considering the professional groups of the unemployed registered in mainland Portugal, the IEFP highlights 'unskilled workers' (27.2%), 'workers in personal services, security protection and sales' (20.0%), 'administrative staff' (12.1%) and 'specialists in intellectual and scientific activities' (10.3%).
Compared to the same month in 2023 and taking into account the professional groups with the greatest representation, there was an increase in unemployment in most professional groups, with particular emphasis on 'plant and machine operators and assemblers' (12.5%) and 'skilled workers in industry, construction and craftsmen' (11.5%). The IEF highlights the reduction in unemployment among 'farmers and skilled workers in agriculture, fishing and forestry' (-1.9%).
Throughout the month of April, 45,867 unemployed people registered with employment services throughout the country, 23.5% more than in the same period last year and 3.3% more than in March.
The job offers received throughout the month totalled 9,924 throughout the country, a number higher than in the same month (13%) but lower than in the previous month (-10.5%).
The economic activities with the greatest representation in the job offers received throughout April in mainland Portugal were 'real estate, administrative and support services' (27.2%), 'accommodation, catering and similar' (14%), 'wholesale and retail trade' (13.1%) and 'public administration, education, health and social support activities' (8.5%).
The placements made in April totalled 8,040 throughout the country, 5.1% more than in the same month last year and 3.3% less in chain.
