The protest action was called by the Union of Commerce, Office and Service Workers of Portugal (CESP) and will take place between today and Thursday, with two-hour stoppages per shift.

Speaking to Lusa, Orlando Gonçalves of CESP said that workers had joined the strike "en masse" in the morning shift periods (5:00 to 7:00 and 10:00 to 12:00), and the same scenario is expected in the remaining shifts.

"The participation of the workers is very positive. A large participation by workers in various areas. We now had a large picket line in the morning period, with the participation of a hundred workers," he said.

The unionist indicated that the stoppage of EMEL workers affected the operation of several of the company's facilities, namely the Olivais and Entrecampos towing park, as well as the Graça funicular and the Laranjeiras and Campo Grande stores.

"These numbers that are appearing here are indicative that the workers are, in fact, very united in relation to what was decided in the plenary sessions," he said.

Orlando Gonçalves also stressed that the workers are available to meet immediately with the EMEL board of directors, denying that there is "great openness" on the part of the company.

"The proclaimed willingness to dialogue resulted in a meeting that took place on 2 April and no counter-proposal was presented. Therefore, this idea that they want to negotiate is a fallacy. Since then, no meeting of any kind has taken place," he noted.

Lusa contacted a source from the EMEL administration, but has not yet received a response.

In a note sent to Lusa on Monday, EMEL assured that it maintains the commitments assumed in the Company Agreement and the commitment to dialogue with workers.

"The board of directors maintains its commitment to social dialogue with the workers' representative structures, contributing to a sustainable and harmonious balance of the company, reinforcing the labour rights of its employees, maintaining the commitments assumed in the current company agreement," says the EMEL note.

EMEL has around 700 employees.
