Execution of European funds? "Budget crisis is not good news"
The President of the Republic warned today that Portugal may have problems in executing European funds if there is a "budget crisis" between this year and the next.

"We need to execute the European funds, recover some lost time and accelerate the execution. And the decisive years are this one and 2025. Anything in between being a budget crisis is not good news", warned Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa.
The Head of State was speaking to journalists on the sidelines of the commemorations of the 30th anniversary of the Arpad Szenes - Vieira da Silva Museum, in Lisbon.
"That is why I said that it was good that the 2024 Budget was voted on, it is voted on, and valid for the whole year. I think exactly the same about 2025: it is good that the 2025 Budget is voted on because, if not, there is a risk that this will create problems in practice in the execution of the European funds", he warned.
One day after having participated in the lunch of the commemorations of the 40th anniversary of the National Association of Portuguese Municipalities (ANMP), which took place at the São Francisco Convent, in Coimbra, Marcelo stressed that the mayors "are very committed to the execution of the European funds".
Asked if this is a concern of the socialist mayors, Marcelo considered that "it is a concern of all mayors, because the mayors are the fundamental ones, all of them, whatever the party, with or without a party, they are fundamental to put the work on the ground".
"And, therefore, it is important for them to know that everything that is received from Brussels and is contracted arrives on the ground. To get to the ground, that there is no noise that results in a political crisis suddenly about the Budget", he insisted.
The next State Budget, for 2025, is submitted to the Assembly of the Republic by the PSD/CDS-PP minority Government in October.
