Business confidence in Germany stood at 89.3 points in May for the second month in a row, according to the Ifo Institute for Economic Research.
The assessment of the current situation fell by six tenths compared to April, to 88.3 points, while expectations rose from 89.7 to 90.4 points, in a context in which the German economy is emerging from the crisis "step by step".
By sector, confidence among manufacturing entrepreneurs increased for the third consecutive time, as companies were considerably more satisfied with their current activity and the outlook was less pessimistic than last month, despite the fact that order books continue to decline.
At the other end of the spectrum, the services sector index declined due to a slightly worse assessment of the current situation, although expectations improved somewhat and companies reported an increase in orders.
In trade, the index "took a significant step forward", as companies' expectations improved considerably, although still marked by skepticism, and the current situation.
Finally, business confidence improved again in the construction sector, as companies are more satisfied with the current situation and their expectations are less pessimistic, although the lack of orders continues to be a fundamental problem, according to Ifo.
